Recovered COVID-19 Patients Battle Black Fungus

Black fungus has been reported among recovered COVID-19 patients in India.

Gatekeepers News reports that mucormycosis commonly known as ‘black fungus’, a deadly infection, has been appearing in patients who are recovering or have recovered from COVID-19.

The Indian government has urged States to report cases of black fungus as the country battle the fast-spreading COVID-19 infection.

Gatekeepers News reports that mucormycosis tends to occur most often when a person has weakened immunity from an illness or health condition.

According to medical professionals, COVID-19 patients with diabetes and a weakened immune system, are particularly prone to infection

“The use of steroids to treat severe COVID-19 could be contributing to the condition of the pre-diabetic population,” a Health expert said.

The condition causes discolouration of the eyes and nose, blurred vision, chest pain, and breathing difficulties. In some cases, doctors have had to remove one or both eyes, or part of the jaw to stop the disease from spreading.

Meanwhile, States across India have also ordered emergency measures to counter a surge in the rare infection among coronavirus patients.

Gujarat and Telangana States on Thursday became the latest to declare black fungus epidemics, a day after Rajasthan.

Maharashtra state has reported more than 2,000 cases. Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has about 1,200 cases, officials said.

As of the 24th of May, India’s confirmed COVID-19 case rose to 26,811,947 which includes 304,768 and 23,821,202 recoevries.
