The easing of border restrictions in Austria has led to chaos at the Vienna airport.
Gatekeepers News reports that Austria’s border opening has led to chaos at Vienna International Airport, with long tailbacks at land border crossings.
Passengers complained of being crushed and experiencing “hell” at Vienna’s Schwechat airport, as a result of the easing of the border restrictions.
Similarly, the increased number of people travelling and the corresponding checks have also led to delays at Austria’s road borders.
Gatekeepers News gathered that the new border regulations lifted quarantine requirements for people crossing the border into Austria, though, visitors must show proof of been vaccinated, recovered, or tested negative for the coronavirus.
The Ministry of Health in response to queues complaints, came up with a new decree, effective immediately on Wednesday.
The Decree states that the Bruck an der Leitha district authority now has the option of only carrying out random checks at the airport if there are long queues.
The Spokesman of Vienna Airport, Peter Kleemann, on Wednesday, said the “crush” at the weekend was not a permanent problem, noting that it would be resolved once the EU’s internationally valid “green pass” is introduced – which is expected to happen by July.
However, passengers from risk countries, currently defined as Brazil, India, South Africa, and the UK, still have to be checked in full, compared to the random checks for all other countries.
Last Saturday, Austria lifted the temporary reintroduction of border controls with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
