Nigeria Police Force has clarified that there was no massacre in Benue State, North Central Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Police’s statement follows reports that 36 persons were killed in the State on Friday.
Pictures of 36 lifeless bodies allegedly killed by herders in Benue State circulated on various sections of the media earlier on Friday.
However, the Benue State Police Command in a statement on Friday evening debunked the viral report, saying there was no such incident in the State.
The state Police Spokesperson, Anene Catherine denied and countered the report in a statement titled, ‘Alleged massacre in Kastina-Ala: Police action.’
Gatekeepers News reports that Catherine said the Command deployed officers to villages in Michihe Council Ward, Kastina-Ala Local Government Area, when the report was trending online, to ascertain the authenticity of the reports, but no corpse was found.
“Upon arrival at the Council ward, the detectives observed that they were no corpses or graves to signify any form of burial and no official reports have been made to the police in the area,” the statement read in part.
Catherine added that more police operatives had been deployed to the area for routine patrols and surveillance.
