PDP Leaders Storm NASS To Protest Lauretta Onochie’s Appointment

Leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have stormed the National Assembly (NASS) to protest.

Gatekeepers News reports that leaders of the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have stormed the National Assembly to protest the appointment of Lauretta Onochie.

In 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Onochie is presently the media aide to President Buhari on Social Media.

The leaders on Wednesday demanded the immediate reversal of her appointment as INEC Commissioner.

PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, who led the protest described her appointment as a mockery of democracy.

Secondus emphasised that Onochie who is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot be appointed into a position that requires a high level of neutrality.

He, therefore, urged the leadership of NASS to impress on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately withdraw her nomination.

In the past weeks, Gatekeepers News has reported series of defections of PDP members to APC, the most recent been the formal defection of the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle on Tuesday.

PDP has, however, blamed it on the approach used by APC to lure the defectors.

The main opposition party further accused the current administration of impoverishing the country and subjecting the Nigerians to untold hardship.

The Senate Minority leader, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe was among the PDP lawmakers that joined in the protest.

In October 2020, President Buhari wrote to the Senate to confirm the appointment of one of his media aides, Lauretta Onochie, and three others as Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Other appointees are Professor Mohammed Sani (Katsina); Professor Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa).
