‘Free Guy’, a Disney’s 20th Century Studios film has opened to an estimated $28.4 million to top the weekend box office.
Gatekeepers News reports that the action-comedy movie has surprised industry experts who predicted the film would make closer to $20 million in North America.
According to the studio, “Free Guy” took in $50.9 million worldwide.
The film stars Ryan Reynolds as a guy who comes to learn that he’s a background character in a video game.
The outcome was unexpected because of concerns about rising COVID-19 cases from the Delta variant.
One potential reason for ‘Free Guy’ success could be seen only in theaters as it wasn’t available via streaming. It’s however, hard to ascertain what gave it the boost at the box office.
Meanwhile, Reynolds is already talking of a sequel. The movie star over the weekend Reynolds took to his verified Twitter account to confirm it.
“Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony.”
The film’s director Shawn Levy retweeted Reynolds, and added “Yuuuuuuuup.”
