Powerlifters, Latifat Tijani has won Nigeria’s first gold at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Gatekeepers News reports that Tijani won the gold medal in the female 45kg event to record Team Nigerian first major success at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Tijani who was ahead of China’s Zhe Cui made a top lift of 107kg to secure the top prize in the category.
Zhe Cui won the silver medal while Justyna Kozdryk of Poland was the Bronze medalist.
The outcome of the win shows an improvement on Tijani’s previous record of 106kg at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.
In 2019, Tijani won the bronze medal in the women’s 45 kg event at that year’s World Para Powerlifting Championships.
Her victory compensated for Yakubu Adesokan’s failure to reach the podium in the finals of his -49 class at the competition on Thursday morning.
Adesokan who returned fourth with a lift of 155kg, conceded the podium to the trio of Qarada Omar Hamadeh of Jordan who won the gold, Le Van Cong of Vietnam – silver, and Mamnadov Parvin of Azerbaijan – bronze.
