Kwara state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has constituted a 10-man probe panel to look into the circumstances surrounding the recent flogging of some Arabic school students.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Kwara State Governor, North Central Nigeria, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has constituted a probe panel to look into the circumstances surrounding the recent flogging of some pupils of Misbaudeen Islamic Centre, in Ganmo, Ifelodun local government area of the state.
Gatekeepers News had earlier reported that the father to the female student who was among those brutally flogged in Kwara state, Yunus Olarenwaju says he supports the school’s action.
In the viral video, some students reported to be senior are seen flogging a female student brutally.
The seniors also flogged three boys for attending a birthday party in a bar which the madrasah said is against its rules and regulations.
In a viral complimentary video, a fellow student said that the students went to the bar to celebrate the birthday of one of theirs but didn’t take alcohol as erroneously believed by the head of the Madrasah.
The video which trended online has provoked a wave of backlash on social media, as many Nigerians condemned the handling of the students by the school authorities.
The panel comprises prominent Muslim scholars, community leaders and government officials.
Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye in a statement, said that “the committee is to be chaired by retired Justice Idris Haroon.
“Other members are Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu; Special Assistant to the Governor on Religion (Islam) Alhaji Ibrahim Dan Maigoro; Prof. Hamzat Abdulraheem; Prof Badmus Yusuf; Prof. Ali Agan; Dr. Mohammed Ghali Alaya; Dr. Saudat AbdulBaqi; Hajia Balikis Oladimeji of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN); Mallam Lawal Olohungbebe; and Dr AbdulHameed Sanni (Secretary).
“The terms of reference of the committee include to meet with the affected students, their parents, and the school authorities on the circumstances around the corporal punishments meted to them following the students’ organisation and participation in a birthday party, alleged consumption of liquor and publication of the video footage of same on the social media; review the reward and disciplinary methods in such schools; and make recommendations to the government on how to prevent a recurrence of such in the state.
“The committee has one week to submit its report beginning from their first sitting.”
