Sudan Military Dismisses 6 Ambassadors

Sudan Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has dismissed six Sudanese ambassadors from their posts.

Gatekeepers News reports that those affected include Sudan’s ambassadors to the United States, the European Union, China, Qatar, France and the head of Sudan’s mission to Geneva.

The development comes after the army chief arrested Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok and some high-ranking Sudanese officers were arrested. On Monday, al-Burhan also declared the dissolution of the transitional government and the sovereign council and announced a nationwide state of emergency. He also removed state governors and noted the elections will be held in July 2023.

Giving an update on Tuesday, Hamdok’s office said the deposed prime minister and his wife have been allowed to return to their home in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, under “heavy security”, while other civilian officials arrested on the day of the coup remained in detention, their locations unknown.

Meanwhile, the African Union has suspended Sudan’s participation in its activities until the restoration of a civilian-led authority.

Similarly, the United States has declared its decision to suspend emergency assistance worth $700m to Sudan. As Sudan’s military becomes more internationally isolated under heavy criticism, the World Bank has also suspended its funding.
