Malaysian gynaecologist has created the world’s first unisex condom that can be used internally and externally.
Gatekeepers News reports that the new innovation called Wondaleaf Unisex Condom is made out of Polyurethane, a medical-grade material that can be found in medical gloves or dressings for wounds and injuries, and is 0.03 millimetres thick.
“Wondaleaf may be the ideal contraception that can revolutionize sexual and reproduction health,” said Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, former president of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, according to the Wondaleaf website.
“It’s a condom with an adhesive covering that attaches to the vagina or penis, as well as covering the adjacent area for extra protection,” said John Tang Ing Chinh, Wondaleaf Unisex Condom inventor, according to Reuters.
“Once you put it on, you often don’t realize that it’s there.”
Tang assured that the Wondaleaf had gone through several rounds of clinical research and testing and would be available commercially via the firm’s website this December.
“Based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that given time it will be a meaningful addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases,” Tang said.
Gatekeepers News gathered that each box of Wondaleaf contains two condoms, and will cost 14.99 ringgit ($3.61). The average price for a dozen condoms in Malaysia is reportedly 20-40 ringgit.
