Mayor-elect for New York City, Eric Adams has said he would like his first three paychecks in bitcoin.
Gatekeepers News reports that Adams, a former police captain, was elected on Tuesday as the 110th mayor of New York City and second black mayor. He will replace mayor Bill de Blasio in January.
Adams, in a social media post, said he wanted to signal his intention to make New York the “centre of the cryptocurrency industry”.
Adam’s comments upstage his counterpart in Miami, Francis Suarez, who had already said in his own Twitter message that he would take his first paycheck in bitcoin after he was re-elected.
Suarez has already stated that he would like to establish Miami as a hub for cryptocurrency innovation.
However, Adams upped the stakes by asking for three months’ pay in the cryptocurrency.
“In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first three paychecks in bitcoin when I become mayor,” Adams tweeted.
“NYC is going to be the centre of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!”
