UBTH Is Setting New Standards, Making A Statement

UBTH leading the pack.

When doctors and nurses are stretched, no thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is a new and commendable idea to recognise those who stand out.

The management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, has shown that it’s worth its salt and is  working hard to place the medical institution on a solid pedestal for service provision and making the most of the present and future. The hospital’s management has also been observant enough to see the efforts of its staff, who work day and night to ensure the smooth operation of the hospital.

They’ve recorded, recognised, and rewarded hospital staff who have had glowing remarks from patients, peers and superiors. This ensures that such staff are encouraged to dig deeply for courage, bravery and commitment to their work. This is a new one in Nigerian hospitals and is worthy of note. After all, what’s an institution without people?

Prof. Obaseki and other members of the hospital’s management deserve credit for how well they’ve reshaped the hospital and rekindled the hope of many people, not only in medical service delivery but also in medical training for future doctors and nurses.

An example of such recognition of efforts is Mrs Falilat Braimah.

Falilat Braimah: Nursing The Future, Protecting The Nation

The world of nurses is never really known until felt. The stress they go through is second to none, yet errors are unforgivable in their profession.

Patients, especially in Nigeria, complain about the conduct of nurses. This makes the good ones noticeable, and when they show their care and special effects consistently, it’s only high time before they enjoyed the reward. This is the short story of Mrs Falilat Braimah, an Assistant Chief Nursing Officer in the Public Health Nursing Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Mrs Braimah has been at the centre of UBTH’s immunisation and well-baby clinic and is a Manager of the National Programme On Immunization (NPI).

Since January 2021, Mrs Braimah and her team have vaccinated more than 20,000 children, protecting a baby’s future at a time.

While COVID-19 raged on, she took on the mantle and has been in charge of the vaccination programme against the virus since March 2021, administering more than 6,000 doses of the vaccine alongside her team members.

Mrs Braimah is the pioneer and facilitator of a well-baby clinic which holds at UBTH every Tuesday, specifically for infant children that are at-risk and in need of expert medical and nursing management.

She’s described as a “brilliant, friendly and a caring nurse” by her colleagues and the hospital management. Loved, valued, cared for and respected by her peers, superiors and patients, she’s also a go-to figure at the Public Health department of the hospital for her vast knowledge and readiness to help at all times.

For her contribution to the positive perception of the hospital, protection of lives and overall contribution to the healthcare of the people, she’s recognised as the Staff of the Month at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
