Brazilian football legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as Pelé has returned to the hospital.
Gatekeepers News reports that Pelé has been admitted at Sao Paulo’s Hospital Albert Einstein in order to undergo treatment for a colon tumour.
The hospital however noted that the football legend is in “stable and expected to be released in the next few days.”
In September, the 81-year-old 3-time World Cup winner with Brazil underwent surgery to remove a colon tumour and spent almost a month in the hospital. The hospital said at the time that he would need to undergo chemotherapy, and on Wednesday, it was confirmed that the Brazilian is ‘continuing’ his treatment.
Pelé’s assistant Pepito Fornos revealed that he is having chemotherapy sessions to treat the tumour that was found during routine exams at the end of August.
Pelé was briefly put in intensive care after surgery on his right colon. He has spent the past few months recovering at his home in Guaruja, outside Sao Paulo.
Gatekeepers News reports that Pelé won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, and remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches. He has suffered a series of health issues over the last decade, particularly with his hip, and he cannot walk without assistance.
He scored 757 goals officially during his impressive career, although club Santos claim his tally was closer to 1,000, leaving him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Josef Biscan on the all-time list.
Additionally, he was only recently overtaken as the top international goalscorer in South American history, when Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick for Argentina in their World Cup qualifier last week.
Messi has recorded his huge tally in 153 caps for Argentina, while Pelé scored his 77 goals in 92 official matches for Brazil.
