Dustin Walters, 25, has been accidentally shot dead by his 1-year-old son at their home in the 100 block of E. 64th Street, Savannah, a City in Georgia.
Gatekeepers News reports that Walters’ toddler, who found a loaded gun, picked it up and pulled the trigger on December 5, 2021.
Walters was rushed to Memorial Medical Center after Police officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to reports of a shooting at his home. Savannah Police Department confirmed that he died as a result of his injuries.
Police said he was shot ‘accidentally’ by a child under the age of two and did not immediately confirm Walters’ relationship with the child, but Walters has a one-year-old son, Mars Cameron Walters, with his wife, Tori.
“The preliminary investigation determined that Walters was wounded when a toddler, who was just under 2 years of age, found and fired the handgun, striking Walters,” police said.
Details of the investigation related to the incident were not made public until December 14, when investigators said a child was involved in the shooting.
According to investigators, family members of the deceased were present in the house when the gunshot was fired, though the type of gun that was used has not been made known.
They noted the incident was ‘accidental’ and it is not clear if any relatives face criminal charges over the shooting.
Walters was laid to rest on December 10th in Rincon, Georgia, his hometown. He is survived by his wife, Tori and his infant son, Mars Cameron Walters.
“We grieve along with the Walters family,’ Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter said in a release.
“As a parent, I cannot imagine what this family is going through or will continue to go through in the coming years. What we want to make sure now is that parents are aware that although rare, these incidents can happen with tragic results.”
