JUST IN: N’Assembly Removes Direct Primaries Clause From Electoral Bill

National Assembly Electoral
The National Assembly has removed clause 87 of the electoral act amendment bill.

Gatekeepers News reports that the National Assembly deleted clause 87 of the electoral act amendment bill which provides for a compulsory direct primary poll for all political parties in the country.

The Senate and House of Representatives, on Wednesday, approved direct and indirect primary clauses as a mode of electing candidates by political parties for general elections.

The change, at the Senate, was made to the legislation after Abdullahi Yahaya, senate leader, sponsored a motion in the upper legislative chamber.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari withheld his assent to the bill transmitted to him, citing the impracticality of the direct primary mode at this time of the nation’s history.

The rejection however compelled the House and indeed the Senate to reconsider the bill and vote to include “direct and indirect primary” provision in the electoral bill.

Reconsidering the bill in the Committee of the Whole a while ago, the House unanimously passed the provision.
