Insurers paid over N11 billion as claims for losses suffered during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has disclosed.

Gatekeepers News reports that NIA Chairman, Ganiyu Musa made the disclosure on Tuesday at a media briefing in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

Nigerian youths had in 2020 trooped out in their numbers to peacefully protest against police brutality for weeks. The #EndSARS protest was however hijacked by hoodlums which led to the loss of lives and damage to both private and government properties.

The NIA boss said of as of October 2021, insurance companies paid over N9 billion as claims for about N20 billion estimated losses suffered during the protests.

He noted that an additional N2 billion was paid between October 2021 and January 2022.

“As of January, insurers have paid over N11 billion as claims that arose from the #EndSARS protests of 2020,” Musa said.

According to the NIA, about 2000 businesses were affected during the protests across the country.

Musa assured that the NIA will continue to emphasise the need for insurance companies to pay all genuine insurance claims and will not hesitate to sanction erring member companies.
