Gatekeepers News reports that the elderly female driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake as she was in reverse and accelerated into outdoors diners at a busy restaurant in Miami Beach, killing one person and injuring six others.
According to reports, the accident which happened on Washington Avenue in trendy South Beach just after 6 pm outside an Italian restaurant – Call Me Gaby, left tables overturned and napkins strewn about the sidewalk.
Cops said the elderly woman was backing into a space, she sped up without warning and hit several tables.
Police have, however, not identified the driver and have not said whether she will be charged.
A witness, Clement Lottier, shared a video that showed smoke and people running away from the restaurant.
According to reports, seven people were taken to hospital, including a three-year-old child, with many of them on stretchers, but one of them later died from the injuries sustained.
Meanwhile, Police have not identified the dead victim or any of those injured.
A Twitter user while reacting to the incident said, “I am never eating outside of a restaurant on a busy street ever again I just watched a car back into people eating outside on Miami Beach.”
Miami Beach Police then advised the general public in a tweet to avoid the area, which was closed due to the investigation.
Three hours after the crash, overturned tables, cloth napkins, and evidence markers lined the sidewalk outside the restaurant.
Robert Deburro said, “There was a small boy and a few people trapped underneath the vehicle… A bunch of people lifted the car and pulled a young boy out.”
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber described it as a ‘devastating tragedy.’
“Our entire city grieves for all the victims and their families,” Gelber said in a statement.
