UNILORIN Alumni Association Crisis Deepens

The crisis rocking the University of Ilorin UNILORIN Alumni Association has taken a nosedive with the call for congress by a faction of the association under the auspices of “body of past presidents”.

Gatekeepers News reports that Executive Committee of the UNILORIN Alumni Association in a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Stephen Olawale Fasakin described the planned congress scheduled for March 26, 2022, as illegal and urged members not to attend.

Fasakin said the planned Congress by the “Body of past Presidents” was unknown to the association.

He added that that the association’s constitution under Article 9 (d) gave the duly executive committee powers to organise Congress of the association and present reports.

The statement read in part, “It is unambiguous that the so called “body of past presidents”, which is not recognized by our Constitution, has no such powers to organize Congress.

“Consequently, while dissociating ourselves from such illegal meeting, we hereby implore all members of the Alumni to ignore the provocative notice served from the power grabbers.

“The elected Executive Committee is undeterred by this distraction and will continue to work with well- meaning members of the Alumni to make more positive impacts on our dear Alma mater and our nation at large.”

Earlier, The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association has dissolved the two factional executives of the association.

While Dr Wale Fasakin led a faction of the executive, Engr Iswat Lawal led another faction.

The dissolution of the warring executives formed part of the resolutions of the NEC meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The meeting was convened by the body of past presidents of the Unilorin Alumni Association.

The dissolution followed the adoption of the report of Professor Adegboyega Fawole led-Fact Finding Committee raised as a result of the leadership crisis rocking the association.

The chairman, Body of Past Presidents and retired Professor of Educational Management, David Olufemi Durosaro, presided over the meeting that had representatives from various chapters of the association in attendance.

The NEC also resolved to change the signatories of bank accounts of the association due to allegations of illegal withdrawals from the association’s bank accounts by the leadership of one of the factional groups.

Origin of the crisis

The Alumni Association crisis begin over the plan to remove the factional National President of the association, Dr Stephen Fasakin.

Some leaders of the association under the auspices of past presidents have announced the suspension of Fasakin from office.

However, some chairmen in charge of nine different state chapters of the Federation of the Unilorin Alumni Associatio disassociated themselves from the purported suspension of the national executive of the association.

The Chairmen of the chapters noted that the kangaroo meeting held on February 19 by rebels group to sack the national executive of the Alumni association did not have their blessing as well as support and none of them was in attendance as thugs and miscreants were handsomely paid to attend the illegal meeting where the rights of chapters and their chairmen were denied.

They, however, urged the group to follow the path of honour and reminded them that the matter was already before the court.
