First Nigerian female Vice-Chancellor at the University of Benin, Edo State and first Nigerian woman to receive a Doctorate, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that the demise of Alele-Williams, an education icon and great Mathematician, was confirmed on Friday night. She was aged 89.
Born on December 16, 1932, in Warri, Delta state, she started in 1954 as a mathematics teacher in Ede, Osun State. Alele-Williams was appointed the first female vice-chancellor of UNIBEN in 1985.
The deceased had served as regional vice-president for Africa of the Third World Organization for Women in Science and was the first president of the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics.
She was a consultant to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Institute of International Education Planning.
