By Gbenga Akingbule

Borno State Government on Wednesday commended the Federal Government for donating over 100,000 clothing to Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs), saying the gesture will go a long way in ameliorating the plight of the IDPs.

Gatekeepers News reports that other relief items donated by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development include 19,200 blankets and 19,200 polythene mats.

The Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum represented by his deputy Umar Kadafur at handing over ceremony, said the relief items will be distributed to IDPs in the State.

“I want to assure the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development that these relief items are quite appreciated and will be distributed for the purpose intended.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for always coming to the aide of Borno State with humanitarian assistance and also having confidence in the Governor Zulum led- administration,” Kadafur said.

The Deputy Governor revealed that over 20 communities of IDPs have so far been resettled back to their ancestral homes by the state government following the return of peace adding that packages were given to them to rebuild their livelihood.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Alh. Bashir Alkali who represented the Minister at the occasion said his mission to Borno State was to hand over non-food relief items to Borno IDPs.

Presentation of Relief Materials to the Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur

“Let me appreciate Your Excellency for providing the good working relationship and partnership between Borno State and the Federal Government (particularly the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, FMHADMSD and her Agencies). This goes to show the importance Your Excellency has attached to ending the plight of these unfortunate victims (especially the women and children) of the insurgency. I can assure you that President Muhammadu Buhari is solidly in support of bringing this insurgency to an end and returning the victims back to their lives in dignity. This desire is apparent in many projects and programs that are ongoing for that purpose.

“One of such projects is Mr President’s approval for the purchase of Humanitarian Recovery Needs for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State which was provided through the FMHADMSD in 2019 as a Federal Government Special Intervention Fund to purchase relief items for the returned refugees from Cameroon, Chad & Niger that have been accommodated in twelve (12) camps namely Monguno, Bakassi, Dalori 1, Muna, Bama, Ngala, Dikwa, Gwoza, Pulka, Damboa, Banki, and Mafa camps in Maiduguri, Borno State.

“The relief items we are handing over today include 75,600 pieces of clothing material for women, 72,000 pieces of clothing material for Men, 19,200 blankets and 19,200 polythene mats. These items have been successfully delivered and I am here today, on behalf of the Honourable Minister, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, to hand over these items to Your Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum for these refugees,” the Permanent Secretary.
