Elon Musk on Wednesday hinted that Twitter may start charging commercial and government users.
Gatekeepers News on April 25th reported that the billionaire entrepreneur sealed the deal to acquire Twitter for $44bn (£34.5bn).
Twitter board had tried to manoeuvre Musk’s bid to take over the social media company.
“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated. I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans,” Musk said in a joint statement announcing the takeover.
“Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it,” he added.
Confirming fears by many that his takeover might lead to the commercialisation of the social media platform, Musk in a tweet in the early hours of Wednesday, said commercial and government users may be asked to pay a slight cost pay for the platform.
In his defence, he explained that free services led to the downfall of great businesses.
He, however, noted that the micro-blogging site would “always” remain free for casual users.
“Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a slight cost for commercial/government users,” Musk tweeted.
The entrepreneur in a reply to a tweet added, “Some revenue is better than none!”
In an earlier tweet, Musk said, “Ultimately, the downfall of the Freemasons was giving away their stonecutting services for nothing.”
