Nigeria And Morocco To Build World’s Longest Offshore Pipeline

Federal Government of Nigeria and Morocco are set to build the world’s longest offshore pipeline and second-longest pipeline in the world Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) project.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) will carry gas from Nigeria to Morocco, running across 11 West African countries.

Tolu Ogunlesi, media aide of President Muhammadu Buhari said the partnership, which is between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Group (NNPC) and ONHYM of Morocco when President Buhari paid a State Visit to His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco in June 2018.

Ogunlesi said, “Nigeria (@NNPCgroup) and Morocco (#ONHYM) are teaming together to build the longest offshore pipeline in the world and second-longest pipeline in the world.

“It will carry gas from Nigeria to Morocco (& Europe), running across 11 West African countries. The Agreement for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) was originally signed by the two countries when President @MBuhari paid a State Visit to Morocco in June 2018.”

In 2021, it was further disclosed during the virtual signing ceremony of the financing agreements related to the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the NMGP project that the agreement between the two nations will share equally the Project cost which is estimated at USD 90.1 million.

During the virtual summit, the IsDB promised to support the Moroccan contribution and participate in the financing of the project up to an amount of USD 15.45 million under the “Service Ijara” operation. For the Nigerian Contribution, the IsDB Bank approved financing of an amount of USD29.75 million which will bring the contribution of the Bank to 50% of the total cost of the FEED study of the project.

Meanwhile, Worley has been contracted to carry out a FEED study for the proposed NMGP project. The Engineering company wrote on its website, “We’ve been awarded a contract to provide main front-end engineering design (FEED Phase II) services for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) project. The engineering study is progressing in accordance with the initial project planning.”

The NMGP which is over a 7,000 km long gas pipeline will be promoted by the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of Nigeria, will link Nigeria with Morocco, cross 11 west African countries and extend to Europe. It will be the longest offshore pipeline in the world and the second-longest pipeline overall.

It is expected to traverse 13 countries and will help to boost local industries and economies by delivering a reliable and sustainable energy source. It will also support industrial development and create employment opportunities.

In addition to this, the pipeline will provide a new avenue for countries along the route to export their gas to their neighboring countries and Europe.
