JUST IN: UK PM Boris Johnson To Resign After Series Of Scandals

Boris Johnson is set to resign as the UK Prime Minister after a series of scandals.

Gatekeepers News reports that Johnson will stand down as Conservative Party leader after losing the support of his ministers and MPs.

In the meantime, Johnson will continue as Prime Minister, till a conservative leadership contest takes place this summer, thereafter a new Prime Minister will be in place for the party conference in October.

He has been under pressure from members of his government and a number of ministers had resigned from the government, citing a loss of trust in Johnson.

The resignations followed the latest scandal of Johnson’s handling of the concerns raised over Chris Pincher, Deputy Chief Whip, over allegations of sexual misconduct.

On Wednesday, Will Quince, Minister for Children and Families; Robin Walker, Minister of State for School Standards, and John Glen, Treasury Minister, resigned their positions.

On Tuesday, Sajid Javid, UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, and Rishi Sunak, UK Treasury Chief, resigned from the cabinet.

Earlier in the year, Johnson appointed Pincher as the Deputy Chief Whip despite claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club.

Although Johnson had apologised for backing Pincher who eventually resigned, he vowed to fight on.

“The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances, when he has been handed a colossal mandate, is to keep going, and that’s what I’m going to do,” he had said.

According to reports, several United Kingdom (UK) cabinet ministers reportedly gathered on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s office to ask him to resign.

Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019 after winning a Tory leadership contest and went on to win a historic landslide general election victory five months after that.
