A total of 1303 Women  And Girls have benefited from a  Second Chance Education Programme organised by Plan International in Borno and Yobe States, an official of the development and humanitarian organisation has said.

Gatekeepers News reports that the beneficiaries include 200 out-of-school women and 1103 in-school female students who got the Non-Formal and Formal Education.

Elizabeth Ndyanabangi, Teaching at The Right Level Technical Advisor with Plan International made the disclosure on Monday at an occasion where 27 desktop computers were to donated to students at the Federal Low  -cost Junior Secondary School, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State.

According to Ndyanabangi,  the project which commenced in September 2021 and winds up in July 2022 is funded by The people of Japan through UN women while  Plan International Nigeria carried out the implementation.

Also, the project will build the skills of young women and girls through  ICT skills which contributed to the project outcome for conflict-affected women and girls who are self-reliant and have access to improved livelihood options and other needed services that support their protection, and recovery from Gender Based Violence (GBV).

“The learners we are dealing with are young women, we have mothers out there that are out of school not by their will but because they gave birth and they felt education is needed no more. But we went out and brought these women back and took them through foundational literacy which help them to be able to read and write and also gave them ICT skills in the Hausa Language.

Ndyanabangi added that “For the in-school learners from Junior Secondary  School(JSS) 1-3, we accessed and found out that children still lacking foundational literacy, but because JSS3 is in a critical area of moving into higher secondary, we didn’t want to interfere, so we decided to take on JSS 2 learners and proudly we can see children able to spell and pronounce words, we have more readers in JSS as compared to before.”

To ensure the sustainability of the project, Plan International Nigeria revealed that 51 teachers have been trained while its partners like the State Agency for Mass Education ( SAME) , State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and non Formal Education(NMEC), Ministries of Education and Women Affairs were carried along before and during project implementation.

167 desktop computers were provided by Plan International to beneficiaries in Borno and Yobe states. The organisation also carried out constructed five temporary learning centres, rehabilitation of three ICT laboratories, and Constructed Eight latrines as part of interventions in both states.

Aisha Mohammed Abubakar 14, one of the female students at the occasion commended Plan International and the donors for the education intervention stating that the gesture is already yielding positive results.
