Court Strikes Out NANS’ Suit Against ASUU And FG

National Industrial Court (NIC) sitting in Abuja has struck out a suit filed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to compel the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government to call off the ongoing strike action.

Gatekeepers News reports that in the suit, ASUU was cited as the 1st Respondent while the Minister of Education and the Attorney-General of the Federation were listed as 2nd and 3rd Respondents, respectively.

However on Tuesday, when the matter came up, the factional President of NANS, Umar Faruk Lawal notified the court that he had filed a motion for discontinuance.

He said his decision to withdraw the suit was because of the challenge by NANS, which contested his standing and denied that he is the President of the student body, as he had deposed to.

Though the other two respondents were not represented, however, counsel to ASUU, Marshal Abubakar, informed the court that he was not opposed to Lawal’s application to withdraw the suit.

Consequently, Justice Polycarp Hamman struck out the matter.

Gatekeepers News reports that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s failure to meet its demands bordering on the funding of universities as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers.
