ASUU: “Governments Should Embrace Organised Labour As Partners For Progress” Strike

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its eight months old strike.

Gatekeepers News reports that the development comes after an all-night meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, over the Court of Appeal ruling which ordered the union to resume work immediately.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s failure to meet its demands bordering on the funding of universities as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers.

Several meetings between ASUU and the federal government have ended in deadlock. The government dragged the union to the national industrial court to challenge the strike.

On September 21, an industrial court granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Not satisfied with the ruling, ASUU approached the court of appeal seeking leave to challenge the lower court’s decision. The appellate court ordered ASUU to call off the strike immediately before seeking to appeal the judgment.

This is a developing story…
