FACT CHECK: Is Tinubu’s ‘Ally’ Mueez Akande Dead?

On Friday, November 18, it was reported by ThisDay Newspaper that Mueez Adegboyega Akande was dead.

Gatekeepers News reports that the news of the alleged death of Mueez Akande set the internet agog and has been among the top trending stories on social media.

Netizens have promptly swooped on the story online with various comments and angles to the story. This has led to a barrage of inquiries from our numerous readers at Gatekeepers News, desirous of establishing the truth or otherwise of the story.

For the records, Mueez Akande is the fellow linked with the true certified copies of a forfeiture order of $460,000 from Tinubu’s accounts in the United States. This issue is still marred in controversy in the build-up to the 2023 Presidential election, where Tinubu is a frontline candidate under the auspices of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

David Hundeyin, an investigative journalist who has been on this issue of $460,000 forfeiture in the US and other ‘unwholesome’ activities of Tinubu, weighed in on the matter and, in a now-deleted tweet said, “On Monday, there was a back channel talk about Mueez Akande wanting to do a tell-all about his involvement with Bola Tinubu in white heroin trafficking.

“Yesterday, he apparently dropped dead under unclear circumstances.

“Very fortuitous for someone. Again.”

Our investigation has, however, revealed that Mueez Adegboyega Akande, the ‘Ally’ of Tinubu mentioned in the US District Court affidavit, is not the same person who died yesterday, as reported by ThisDay Newspaper. On the contrary, the man who died yesterday was Dr. Kolapo Akande, in-law to the wife of APC’s presidential candidate, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Gatekeepers News now reports that Kolapo is married to Oluremi Tinubu’s sister, Dr. Lola Akande, currently the Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives.

He was said to have died at the age of 72.

David Hundeyin, in a new tweet, has recanted and said, “Not Sure why ThisDay published such a story without confirming it, but my information now is that Dr Kolapo Akande, who just died, is the elder brother of Mueez Adegboyega Akande (Who is still very much alive.)

“As such, I’m taking down my earlier tweet with the ThisDay story link.”

Verdict

Investigation done by Gatekeepers News revealed that Dr Kolapo Akande is the man who died yesterday and not Mueez Akande, as earlier reported by ThisDay. The story is, therefore, false. The Akande mentioned in the Chicago papers is not the same as Tinubu’s in law. They are not even related.
