Tinubu/Shettima: YP4T Organises Grassroots Football Tournament

Young Professionals for Tinubu/Shettima 2023 (YP4T) has organised a grassroots football tournament to galvanise support for the candidacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Asiwaju Bola Tinubu/Kashim Shettima ahead of the February 25 election.

Gatekeepers News reports that the group disclosed this during a media parley held at the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the group, John Ikeotuonye, reiterated that their overwhelming support for Tinubu/Shettima is hinged on their conviction and proven track record of the former Lagos state governor.

Ikeotuonye said, “Many wonder and ask us why young men like us support older people like Tinubu, which our answer is very simple, Tinubu is the only candidate amongst the three top contending candidates with a proven track record of gathering the best hands and brains into governance given his antecedents.

“There’s no doubt that older politicians have failed us in the past in Nigeria, however, we believe that in life someone has to hand over the baton to the next generation, which Jagaban symbolizes or represents.

“What Nigeria needs at this moment is a leader like Tinubu to usher us into prosperity, because he has the experience and know-how to make it happen. He is a square peg in a square hole, a detribalized Nigerian who appoints people based on merit and not on sentiments, whether ethnic, religious, etc.”

On why the group chose football, he said, ” football and politics have something in common, which is that you can’t get the best players without going to the grassroots, just as you can’t be a good politician without having ground in your grassroots.”

The competition will be an 8-team carefully selected 2-day event, beginning from February 10 to February 11, at the Nigeria Police College playing ground at Ikeja, Lagos state.

It will involve teams from different parts of Lagos – Ikeja, Lagos Island, Badagry, and Ikorodu, etc, and the format will be knockout in the first round of matches, leaving four teams that will proceed to the semi-final.

Winners will be given a cash prize of N250,000, the runner-up will receive N150,000 while the third place will get N100,000 outside other welfare packages, souvenirs, gift items, etc., not excluding the various participating teams.

Meanwhile, an appearance fee will be given to every participating team, including branded jerseys, face caps, recharge cards for both teams and fans, transport support for teams coming from Lagos Island, Badagry, Ikorodu etc.
