Toilets are vital facilities for upholding adequate sanitation and hygiene for humans. The absence of good sanitation can result in different kinds of illnesses and diseases.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Government and various stakeholders often kick against open defecation. Individuals and institutions have roles to play in ensuring proper and hygienic disposal of human waste.
It appears that the University of Lagos (UNILAG), an educational institution in Southwest Nigeria, is doing little or nothing to help curb open defecation in the country and the State in particular.
In a video seen by Gatekeepers News our source who is an Alumnus of the institution, exposed the deplorable state of toilets in the school.
Our source visited his alma mater earlier this month (February 2023) and requested to use the toilet but was informed that the toilet is bad and has been locked for a long time.
When the toilet was opened, our source could not fathom why the institution could turn a blind eye to the several complaints by the officials using the toilet.
The security officials confirmed to him that they have been making use of the bushes (open defecation) since the Management took no action.
Following the revelation, it may not be surprising that the condition of the toilets on the main campus might have also forced the students to settle for bushes and quiet places in the school environment.
Disappointed by his discovery, our source called for a change saying the condition of the toilet is condemnable and should not be ignored.
He noted that the serene environment we admire abroad can also be replicated in Nigeria if all hands are on deck.
