Swift was born on December 13, 1989, to Scott Kingsley Swift (father) and Andrea Gardner Swift (mother) in West Reading, Pennsylvania.
Her father is a former stockbroker for Merrill Lynch and her mother is a former homemaker who previously worked as a mutual fund marketing executive. She was named after singer-songwriter James Taylor.
Her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, was an opera singer. Swift became interested in musical theater and performed in four Berks Youth Theatre Academy productions at age nine.
In 2009, she made her television debut as a rebellious teenager in a CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode.

In 2014, Swift signed a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and a recording contract with Big Machine Records in 2005. Her 2006 self-titled debut album made her the first female country singer to write a U.S. album.
