Delta State Police Command has announced the dismissal and arraignment of Inspector Ubi Ebri who allegedly shot dead one Onyeka Ibe at a checkpoint on April 5, 2023.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Inspector Ebri attached to the area command patrol team while on a Stop-and-search duty on the Ugbolu-Illah Road on April 5, allegedly pulled the trigger on Ibe and killed him instantly for allegedly refusing to give a bribe of N100.
The deceased, who was said to be a phone seller in the popular Ogbeogonogo Market in the state, was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, but was confirmed dead on arrival.
He was arraigned before an Asaba Magistrate’s Court for murder trial on Wednesday.
The court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre and that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has urged policemen “to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens, in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”
The police command stated that it hoped that the case of the dismissed Inspector would serve as a deterrent to other officers.
