In a bid to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, Borno State Governor Prof Babagana Zulum, on Tuesday, commenced a massive distribution of Food and Non- Food items to less privileged and targeting a total 1.8 million persons across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that Zulum flagged off the palliative measure at the Muna garage area of Maiduguri, the state capital, where 8,000 women were presented with cash and wrappers. At the same time, 5,000 male and female heads of households received assorted bags of rice, beans, and maize.
The distribution is the state’s response to the recent removal of fuel subsidy , leading to an astronomical increase in fuel pump price.
Governor Zulum emphasized that the food and non-food items distribution was a necessary response to the fuel subsidy removal.
“We are doing this food distribution in line with the federal government’s rolled-out palliative meant to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on the vulnerable citizens,” Zulum said.
He added that this is merely the initiative’s first phase, targeting 300,000 households, and about 1.8 million people.
The beneficiaries were full of praises to Governor Zulum as they could not hide thier joy following the distribution of food and non- food items.
“The governor has shown good leadership, he has also displayed his true commitment and passion to liberate the poor and less privileged people across Borno state,” Ibrahim Mohammed, one of the beneficiaries said.
Another beneficiary , Zara Musa commended governor Zulum for his continued humanitarian gesture and urged the him not to relent in reaching out and empowering the less privileged in the society.
“I’m full of joy , I received food items, wrapper and cash from Governor Zulum,” Musa said.
