Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has promised to provide N500 million in monthly assistance to poor residents of the state in order to mitigate the effects of the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy.
Gatekeepers News reports that Obaseki made the promise on Wednesday, while speaking to members of the Nigeria Labour Congress during a peaceful protest in the state.
The governor said, “I have decided that every month, going forward, we will take N500 million from our own money to give to the poorest of the poor in Edo State. We are not waiting for anybody.”
Obaseki encouraged the Federal Government to distribute the palliatives it promised during the President’s broadcast to local governments around the country since they are more accessible to the public.
Tinubu had in a national broadcast on Monday, unveiled a N500bn palliative for manufacturers, small businesses and farmers. He also released plans to increase salaries and acquire 3,000 mass transit buses.
