Nigeria’s Super Falcons have surged up eight spots in the global rankings, moving from the 40th to the 32nd position in the world, according to the recent women’s rankings disclosed by FIFA on Friday.
Gatekeepers News reports that in the rankings presented by the international football governing body, the eleven-time African champions have upheld their status as the premier female national team on the continent.
The remarkable advancement of the Falcons in the current rankings can be largely attributed to the team’s exceptional performance in the recently concluded 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian squad progressed to the tournament’s second round, having secured a draw against Canada in their opening game, a victory against co-hosts Australia in their subsequent match, and another draw against the Republic of Ireland, which enabled them to advance from Group B with five points.
In the second round, the Falcons engaged European champions and eventual finalists England in a captivating match that lead to a penalty shootout, resulting in a 4-2 defeat.
Despite Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup held in Australia, it’s Sweden that has clinched the top position in the latest FIFA rankings, while Spain ascended to second place from fourth.
The Scandinavians dethroned the USA, which has now descended to the third position from its previous rank of second.
