Prominent Niger Delta Ex-Militant Leaders Unite to Combat Oil Theft

In a significant development aimed at addressing the issue of oil theft and illegal bunkering, influential ex-militant leaders from the Niger Delta have joined forces as part of the economic recovery programme of President Bola Tinubu.

Gatekeepers News reports that this alliance, which brings together key stakeholders, took place during a crucial meeting held at the Okochiri Palace of King Ateke Tom in Okirika Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Among the ex-militant leaders present at the meeting were King Ateke Tom, High Chief Ajube Bibopiri (General Shoot-at-Sight), Victor Ben Ebukabowei (General Boyloaf), and prominent freedom fighter Alhaji Asari Dokubo. Notably, the gathering marked a fresh beginning for these leaders, who had previously been at odds due to political and personal differences.

The primary focus of the meeting was to address oil theft and discuss the most effective ways to handle pipeline contracts related to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The ex-militant leaders proposed decentralizing the pipeline surveillance contracts, advocating for allocation in their respective areas or states of influence.

This unified front against oil theft and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta has the potential to significantly impact the region and the Nigerian economy.

Their position aligns with that of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who also stressed the need to avoid awarding all pipeline surveillance contracts to a single individual.

While the details of the renewed pipeline surveillance contract held by Tantita Security Service Limited, owned by former militant leader Government Ekpumpolo (Tompolo), were not disclosed, it was indicated that offshore surveillance responsibilities have been added to the contract.

The collaboration and the renewed focus on tackling oil theft could bring about positive changes in the region’s efforts to safeguard pipelines and protect the interests of the NNPCL and the Nigerian economy.
