In a significant move to combat wildlife trafficking and protect the diminishing elephant population, the Federal Government of Nigeria has destroyed 2.5 tons of confiscated elephant tusks valued at over $11.2 million (9.9 billion Naira).
Gatekeepers News reports that the destruction took place in Abuja on January 9, 2024.
The elephant tusks were seized from wildlife traffickers, in a bid to underscore the government’s commitment to preserving endangered species and tackling illicit trade in wildlife.
This decisive action aligns with international efforts to address the pressing issue of wildlife conservation and signals Nigeria’s dedication to safeguarding its unique flora and fauna.
