Makinde Signs Oyo Electricity Bill

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria has signed into law the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill.

Gatekeepers News reports that Makinde while speaking at the 20th-anniversary celebration of the British American Tobacco Ibadan Plant, had promised to sign the bill establishing the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission into law.

The governor, through his verified X handle (@seyimakinde), said he has fulfilled his pledge for the creation of the commission.

He wrote, “As promised earlier in the week, I signed the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill into law today. This law will enable Oyo State to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within the state.

“In my remarks during the signing, I said an amendment of the constitution like these is what we mean when we advocate for fiscal federalism.”

Makinde added that as the government works towards energy sufficiency; the people would be able to hold state governments accountable on the issue of electricity supply.

Gatekeepers News reports that President Bola Tinubu signed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law on Friday.

The Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeks to “address the development and environmental concerns of host communities, and sets aside five per cent of the actual annual operating expenditures of power generating companies from the preceding year for the development of their respective host communities.”
