Reps Ask FG To Ban Single-Use Plastics And Styrofoam

House of Representatives has asked the federal government to ban styrofoam and single-use plastics across the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the legislators requested the federal government ban the production, importation, distribution, and use of the products.

The motion was passed during plenary on Wednesday, following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Muktar Shagaya, a lawmaker from Kwara state.

This development comes weeks after the Lagos government announced a ban on the usage and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the state.

Shagaya, while moving the motion, said the “increasing use” of styrofoam and single-use plastics in Nigeria poses “significant environmental and public health risks”, including pollution of waterways, soil, and air quality.

He explained that chemicals found in styrofoam is “linked to health issues such as cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects.”

The legislator said styrofoam is prohibited in Taiwan, Rwanda, England, and many other European countries, including some towns and states in the US.

Shagaya said, “Currently, the product is illegal in Lagos and Abia states.”

He added that alternatives to styrofoam and single-use plastics such as biodegradable materials, reusable containers, and recyclable packaging, can reduce environmental impact and public health risks.

The motion was adopted when it was put to a voice vote by Ben Kalu, the presiding officer.

The lower legislative chamber subsequently asked for a phased approach to the ban, by “providing sufficient time” for businesses and industries to transition to alternative eco-friendly materials and practices.
