SSANU And NASU To Begin Strike

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have directed their members to commence a nationwide strike starting Monday, March 18.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to a memo addressed to the branches of the unions and dated Friday, 15 March, is action is in response to the Nigerian government’s failure to pay withheld salaries, a situation the unions have termed unfair and unjust.

The strike, expected to last seven days initially, follows unsuccessful appeals and ultimatums issued to the government. The unions have expressed disappointment over the government’s selective treatment, citing the payment of salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while neglecting SSANU and NASU members.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, highlighted the potential impact of the strike on university services, including disruptions to power supply, water, sanitation, and other essential functions.

The unions have urged their members to adhere strictly to the strike directive, indicating that further action may be taken if their demands are not met. This development comes at a critical time for students, especially those currently sitting for exams at various universities.
