The speakers of Nigeria’s 36 state houses of assembly have expressed their support for the ongoing process by the national assembly to establish state police.
Gatekeepers News reports that they made this resolution at the end of a meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Both chambers of the national assembly are working to amend certain provisions of the 1999 constitution to include the creation of state police.
Last month, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stated that Nigeria is not yet “mature” for state police. However, on February 15, the federal government established a committee to explore the possibility of creating state police in the country.
Furthermore, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, announced that President Bola Tinubu and governors have agreed on the modalities for the concept. He also mentioned that a series of meetings would take place to determine the feasibility of a decentralized police force.
