Gatekeepers News reports that this comes after a federal high court in Kano ordered the state government not to enforce the Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, which repealed the 2019 version used to oust Sanusi as Emir in 2020.
On Saturday, Commissioner of Police Usain Gumel addressed a press briefing alongside other security agency officials, stating, “The police command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 Dated 23rd May, 2024 issued by the federal high court sitting in Kano alongside all law enforcement agents in the state.”
Gumel emphasized that the police, military, and other security agencies are working together to provide adequate security and carry out their statutory duties as provided by the constitution.
This announcement comes after Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor, reinstated Sanusi as Emir on Friday, and Aminu Bayero, the dethroned Emir, arrived in Kano shortly after. The governor subsequently ordered the arrest of the deposed Emir.
The court ruling had asked the defendants to “suspend” and “not give effect to the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024” and ordered all parties to “maintain status quo until June 3, 2024.”
