Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organization has expressed its disapproval of the bill passed by the Nigerian Senate to revert the Nation to the old Nigerian National Anthem of 1960.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Group through a press release on Monday, described the decision as hasty, unpopular, and lacking the required of support the vast majority of Nigerians.
The Press release was jointly signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Mal. Ibrahim Abdullahi and the National Secretary, Nasir Balogun.
The group also described the matter as a misplaced priority, as the Senate ought to give issues of such national importance wider consideration and contribution of citizens before resolving.
The statement aligns with the views of the Nation’s Attorney-General and Hon. Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN that the issue of the National Anthem goes beyond what National Assembly Members can decide on their own.
The group pointed out that wider stakeholders such as mature Nigerian citizens, old and young males and females as well as respected citizens from all strata of our national life must be part of it.
Instead, of rushing the passing of the bill on reversion to the old National Anthem, the Group urged the Senate to focus on pressing issues bothering the welfare, care, and protection of Nigerians during these hard times.
Referring to the senate’s decision as ridiculous, the Group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ignore the newly passed controversial bill and focus on his economic and social infrastructure programmes including good take-home pay for workers, enhanced pension package for senior citizens and restoration of full power distribution nationwide.
