With only a few hours left to conclude the election results, South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) is facing a historic defeat.
Gatekeepers News reports that the party has secured 40.23% of the votes so far, short of the 50% needed to win parliament seats outright.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), trails behind with 21.67%, while the new uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party led by ex-President Jacob Zuma has 14.73%.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has 9.46%. If the current trend continues, the ANC will need to form a coalition government with opposition parties to remain in power under President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This would be a historic first for the party, which has dominated South African politics for 30 years.
The outcome will be crucial in determining the country’s future, as the ANC’s support has been dwindling due to various challenges facing the nation.
