In a dawn raid on Saturday, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested over 50 suspected internet fraudsters in Akure, Ondo State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the sting operation, which began around 1 am, targeted two hotels and nightclubs in the Akure metropolis.
Among those arrested was a groom-to-be, who was celebrating his bachelor’s eve with friends at one of the popular clubs.
The EFCC operatives allegedly used tear gas and force to arrest the suspects, injuring two soldiers in the process.
An eyewitness described the scene as chaotic, with operatives entering nightclubs and lounges, tear-gassing people, and beating and arresting them without discrimination.
The raid resulted in the seizure of numerous vehicles, laptops, high-end smartphones, and other items.
This operation comes on the heels of a similar raid in Abuja, where four suspected internet fraudsters were arrested and items including four brands of mobile phones were recovered.
The EFCC has stated that the suspects will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
