FG To Enforce Insurance Policy For Mine Workers After Niger Collapse

The federal government plans to enforce an insurance scheme for mine workers in Nigeria, according to Dele Alake, the minister of solid minerals development.

Gatekeepers News reports that this comes after a mining site collapse in Niger State on June 3, which trapped over 20 workers, with 14 still stuck.

Seven workers have been rescued so far, but the rescue efforts for the remaining workers have been hindered by a lack of equipment and heavy rocks.

Alake visited Niger State Governor Umar Bago to offer condolences and announced the insurance policy, which aims to enhance safety measures and provide relief for miners in case of accidents.

“The disaster was unfortunate and avoidable,” Alake said.

“We will intensify monitoring of mining operations to ensure environmental standards are met.”

The government also plans to implement contingency plans to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on mining sites, such as mandatory installation of support pillars under shafts.

Governor Bago emphasised the need for collaboration between the federal government and sub-nationals to ensure mining companies comply with safety standards.
