National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has temporarily suspended the bypass enrolment process to prevent abuse and rectify irregularities.

Gatekeepers News reports that this decision comes after numerous reports of fraudulent online platforms compelling Nigerians to submit personal information for national identification number (NIN) modification or enrollment services.

“The commission has received numerous reports regarding fraudulent online platforms compelling Nigerians to submit their personal information for national identification number (NIN) modification or enrollment services,” NIMC said in a statement.

“Perpetrators of these illegal activities will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

NIMC has implemented enhanced measures to safeguard information stored in its national identity database, including rigorous security vetting for licensed verification agents and front-end partners.

The commission has also directed law enforcement authorities to crack down on online phishing schemes targeting citizens’ data.

“The NIMC collaborates with relevant security agencies to uphold the utmost data security standards and regulatory compliance,” said Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General/CEO of NIMC.

“We are committed to providing secured identity services and protecting citizens’ data as Nigeria’s foundational identity provider.”

The suspension of the bypass enrollment process is temporary, and NIMC will communicate its resumption to the public later.

The commission has assured Nigerians of the safety of their data and committed to protecting it.
