Democracy Day: FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday

Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, June 12 as a Public Holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement through a statement released by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Aishetu Gogo Ndayako on Tuesday.

The minister of Interior congratulated the citizens of Nigeria on the occasion.

He said, “As we mark another Democracy day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity”.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance.

He reiterated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to positive reforms to revive the nation’s economy and enhance security.

The Minister further urged Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to appreciate the progress that has been made and look forward to a better future for Nigeria’s Democracy.

Democracy Day is celebrated every June 12 to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999.

It was however, formerly celebrated every May 29 but was changed in 2018 to honour Moshood Abiola who won the presidential election which was annulled in 1993.

Abiola died on June 7, 1998, shortly after his release from prison. He was imprisoned for several years due to his self declaration as the winner of the elction.
