Tyla Clears The Air on Her Racial Identity

Grammy award-winning South African singer, Tyla Laura Seethal aka Tyla has addressed rumours regarding her race.

Gatekeepers News reports that the twenty-two-year-old singer clarified the rumours stipulating that she isn’t black through a post on her official X account.

The singer responded to fans’ recurring claim on social media that she is “
white/Indian, and not black.

Tyla revealed that she has black/Zulu, Irish, and Mauritian/Indian ancestry, hence she is a mixed race.

According to the ‘Water’ crooner, in South Africa, she would be classified as coloured, but outside her country, she would be classified as a black woman.

She further noted that she has never denied her blackness and understands the various classifications of race globally.

The post goes “I’ve never denied my blackness… I’m mixed with black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian, and Coloured. In South Africa, I’m classified as a Coloured woman, and elsewhere, I’m classified as a black woman. Race is classified differently worldwide.”
