Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole has mourned the tragic loss of lives that occurred on Monday morning in Jattu, Etsako West local government area of the State, where about four lives were lost due to fallen trees caused by a heavy downpour.
Gatekeepers News reports that Oshiomhole in a statement he personally signed conveyed his deep sadness at the tragic loss of lives, properties, and injuries sustained by numerous individuals.
The incident, which occurred amid a severe rainstorm, resulted in the death of several individuals and left many others injured.
Preliminary reports indicate that the heavy downpour forced market-goers to seek refuge in the market’s covered stalls.
As the storm intensified, the rain caused flooding that weakened the roots of several large trees. The weakened trees subsequently collapsed, crashing onto the stalls where people had taken shelter.
The result was a devastating scene of destruction and chaos.
In his statement, Senator Oshiomhole conveyed his deep sadness at the tragic loss of lives, properties, and injuries sustained by numerous individuals. “It is quite saddening and utterly depressing that innocent persons going about their normal business for daily bread would find themselves caught in this horrendous situation leading to their untimely death and causing others injuries,” Oshiomhole said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured.
The Uzairue market, a cornerstone of commerce in Afemai land for centuries, has long served as a vital economic and cultural hub for people from far and wide. Oshiomhole’s statement reflects the gravity of the loss felt by the entire region.
“As we await official confirmation of the number of casualties,” he added,
“I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident while praying for quick recovery for those who sustained injuries.”
Looking ahead, Senator Oshiomhole has committed to a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragic event.
He emphasized the need to understand what went wrong to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Going forward, I will ensure that we thoroughly investigate what led to the incident in a market that has existed for centuries and catered for our ancestors as the foremost business hub in Afemai land, and to do all we can to ensure that there is no future occurrence,” he assured.
The Senator’s commitment to addressing the tragedy underscores a dedication to both honoring the memory of those lost and safeguarding the community against future disasters. As the region mourns, Oshiomhole’s pledge to seek answers and implement preventive measures offers a glimmer of hope for a more secure and resilient future for the Uzairue market and its patrons.
