Edo State House of Assembly has appealed the decision made by Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which invalidated the impeachment of the state’s former deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

Gatekeepers News reports that the lawmakers have also submitted a request to halt the enforcement of the judgment until the appeal is concluded.

Shaibu was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, April 8, 2024, following the adoption of the report of a seven-man investigative panel appointed by the state chief judge to investigate allegations of misconduct against him.

The panel, led by retired Justice S.A. Omonua, looked into allegations of perjury and leaking of government secrets. Notably, Shaibu declined to appear before the panel during its proceedings.

The impeachment of Shaibu led to the appointment of Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the new deputy Governor by Governor Godwin Obaseki, who will serve the remainder of the governorship term until November 11, 2024.
