All Progressives Congress Campaign Council for the forthcoming Edo State Governorship elections has urged suspension of the proposed nationwide protest.
Gatekeepers News reports that this was disclosed in a statement by the Director General, APC Campain Council, Senator (Pharm.) Matthew A. Urhoghide (FPSN, FNAPharm.).
He appealed to the entire Edo people to give the government of the day a little more time to prove that the reforms which it has begun can and will work in a nation as complex as ours.
The statement read, “Dear Edo people and especially the youths of our dear state. We have arrived at this crossroad where, tomorrow, August 1, 2024 a few Nigerians intend to begin a protest to express general concerns about perceived hardships that we are all agreed, is prevalent now in our nation state.
“The concerns are a consequence of the unstable steps that any new and enduring change such as the current federal government is currently taking must make.
“We have no doubt that subsequently, the renewed hope agenda in Nigeria will yield the common good as its intendement is when, together we grant it the gestation period required for such a bold, decisive and audacious advances to come to fruition.
“This conviction is held by majority of Nigerians, including those who have in the past in our history, supported and sponsored protests such as the planned one.
“The protests in the past, like this one, were aimed at directing government’s attention to perceived ills in the society. Our Royal Father, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, in his Royal wisdom, has joined in the voice to enjoin his subjects and the entire Edo people to give the government of the day a little more time to prove that the reforms which it has begun can and will work in a nation as complex as ours.
“In a letter to Edo people a few days ago, he sued for restraint and patience. Edo people as respecters and believers in traditions are further enjoined to heed the voice of the reverred Palace of the Oba of Benin who not only speaks as the custodian of our heritage but as the go-between his subjects and our ever-watchful ancestors.
“We in the Edo APC join his Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin, royal fathers across the country and every voice on the peace divide to ask for a suspension of the protest.
“Edo APC believes with other #letsSuspendProtest# advocates that needless wastes of life can be avoided (as most times happen when even the best prepared-for protests go south) if Edo people take the lead, as they are wont to do, by demonstrating that a lot can be achieved when common purpose is joined with nationalism.
“When August 1. 2024 breaks and the Nigerian youths, men and women of reason stay back at home in obedience to the wise counsel of the Oba of Benin and the other wise leaders, then the grounds would have shifted from beneath the feet of the other pro-protest Nigerians who hoped to benefit, politically or personally, from the fallout of an event that good reason insists should be shelved in the interest of a country so true and so dedicated to its survival.
“Thank you Great Edo People and may our dear State live! Oba gha to okpere, Ise!”
